Gender, Trade, and Austerity

This week we feature a presentation on one of the ongoing research projects funded by this grant - a collaboration between researchers from the Trade Justice Network, Carleton University, and the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives. The researchers examine the characteristics of the Trudeau government's 'Progressive Trade' agenda (PTA) to determine the degree to which it is progressive, as well as the ways it intersects with austerity trajectories. Thus far, the researchers found that the Canadian PTA has important symbolic significance, but with a lack of gender based analysis, consultation, or actual policy solutions, it lacks substantive potential. In many ways, this mirrors ostensibly 'anti-austerity' platforms in Canada, in which symbolic and discursive overtures are made, but few if any substantive measures are put in place toward more progressive fiscal policies.
