Austerity in Quebec: Neither Romance Nor Despair

McMaster Political Science professor Peter Graefe writes on the state of austerity in Quebec.

Jul 31, 2017

Good morning Austerity readers! Today we feature a paper from McMaster's own Dr. Peter Graefe (political science). Peter's paper discusses the politics of austerity in Quebec, tracing the changes in governing parties, resistance, and discourses from the 2012 student strikes to the present. While the Quebec Liberal Party's clamp down on the student movement in 2012 saw the rise of a Parti Quebecois minority government, they are currently halfway through a majority mandate with 'self-imposed fiscal exigencies'. Dr. Graefe's paper explores this trajectory and the politics and possibilities in Quebec today.
